HAWKE'S BAY DEFEAT AUCKLAND. SPECTACULAR GAME. Playing at McLean Park, Napier, on Saturday, the Hawke’s Bay representative team showed a dash of their old brilliance, and defeated the Auckland team by 21 points to 8. It must he admitted, however, that the Auckland team was not up to full strength. Still, that docs not detract from the merit of the home team’s performance. They disclosed very creditable combination, and were not afraid to throw the ball about in the endeavor to make the game open. Tries for Hawke’s Bay were scored by ILuxtable, O’Dowd, and Kelly, one was converted by Setford, and Yates kicked two penalty goals and one potted goal. WIN FOR WARATAHS. BY THREE-POINT MARGIN. (Per Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. The third Test between New Zealand and New South Wales, played at Lancaster Park to-day, was won by the visitors by 11 points to 8. The weather, unfortunately, was not kind Early showers made the ground greasy, and drizzling showers early in the afternoon kept the crowd arvav. The attendance was 11,000. Followers of football, especially those who had seen Wales play, were nrpnared for the All Blacks’ defeat, and it was freely conceded that Wales were unlucky to lose the rubber After to-day’s match, that opinion was gravely shaken. Wales, meeting one of the weakest teams that has ever represented New Zealand, need ed all the luck of the game to win.
The first snoll was fairly evenly contested, with a -light advantage to Wales, who showed better hack play. The visitors led by eight points to •iil at half-time, and it looked as if they might score a decisive victory. However, in the second spell the All Blacks’ forwards livened up and their hustling tactics kept Wales on the defence for the greater part of the spell. The All Blacks were really unlnekv not to ■ score more points. A good kicker was needed as several easy penalties were missed.
RANFURLY SHIELD MATCH. WAIRARAPA SCORE AN EASY VICTORY. CARTERTON, Saturday. The game between Wairarnpa and Mana.whenua, for the Ranfurlv Shield, resulted in a win -for the holders hv 31 points to 10. The match promised well for a start, hut Wairarapa were much too strong, dominating the plav for three-quarters of the game. Wairarnpa in the last quarter ceased to bother, and Manawhenua scored two tries and potted a
WELLINGTON BEAT OTAGO. DUNEDIN. Saturday. In the poorest game of the season. Wellington defeated Otago by 22 to 9. WIN FOR TARANAKT. HAMILTON, Saturday. A representative match between Taranaki and "Waikato, played here in windy weather, resulted in a win for Taranaki by eight points to six. There was little between the teams. WAIPAW A v. HAVELOCK NORTH. A mixed team of juniors and seniors from the Waipawa Club journeyed to Havelock North on Saturday and played the local players. After an interesting game the final scores read Havelock North 9, Wa.ipawa 9. The visitors were very hospitably entertained after the contest. A return match will he played at Waipawa.
