BERNARD SD AW BUYS AN ISLAND. (By Cable. —-Press Assn. —Copyright) (Australian Press Assn. —United Service). LONDON, September 4. Mr Bernard Sbnw has bought the island Tsola S. Johanna, in Lake Mag"iore. Ttalv. in (nip* to esenpe the irnze of humanity and henceforth he will occupy the sole seventeenth century villa for his summer holidays, instead of going: to the largest hotel in Stressa, where he became the prineipnl sisrht of the town. The manager of the hotel said sadly: “They used to bring- hordes in motor coaches to inspect Mr Shaw. Now he is comine no more.” Thus Stressa has been deprived of its staple industry.
Mr Shaw is not the first author to seek island seclusion. Mr Compton Mackenzie owns Jethou, one of the Channel Islands.
