The manager of the hotel said sadly: “They used to bring- hordes in motor coaches to inspect Mr Shaw. Now he is comine no more.” Thus Stressa has been deprived of its staple industry.

Mr Shaw is not the first author to seek island seclusion. Mr Compton Mackenzie owns Jethou, one of the Channel Islands.
