LICENSING POLLS.

SUGGESTIONS FOR LABOR CONFERENCE. HOW MANY ISSUES? The licensing issue will loom large at the annual conference of the New Zealand Labor Party, to he held in Wellington next month. A number of remits bearing on the question have been forwarded to headquarters, and their nature gives an indication of how sharply the Labor party, in common with other.parties, is divided on the subject. The most direct remit dealing with the liquor question is that forwarded by the Palmerston North Labor Representation Committee, which will ask the conference to carry the following motion: — That the National Executive and the Parliamentary represenatives be instructed to call upon all supporters of Labor at the next General Election to record their votes against the liquor trade, which consistently uses its organisation, both financially and otherwise, to defeat Labor candidates at the elections. The Wellington North branch of the party will submit the following remit: —“That in view of the party’s policy in the matter of State ownership,' the party as a party stand for State Control of the liquor traffic.’’ The Auckland Tramways Union suggests that the Labor Party should support only two issues on the ballot paper in connection with the licensing question, but, on the other hand, the Wellington Builders’ and General Laborers’ Union asks that the following remit should be adopted. “Provided that all referendums are decided on the preferential system of voting, this conference favors the retention (on the Licensing Referendum Ballot Paper) of the third issue, and al many other issues as a reasonable number of electors desire. ’ ’ The Gisborne branch is making the suggestion that separate dates should be provided upon which to take, the General Election poll and the licensing poll,

A proposal is made by the Wellington women’s branch that the conference should advocate that a woman representative should be nominated for the Licensing Committee.
