CHRISTMASTIDE.

COMES WITH A RUSH AND A BUSTLE. RESULTS SATISFACTORY. All things considered business people of this distriet are well satisfied with the results of the Christwhs trade. The rush was slow in starting*, due to the broken weather which had been experienced for some lime delaying shearing* and haymakingl operations, and the fine spell just before Christmas kept the workers busy right up to the last moment. However, the town was thronged nearly all day on Saturday, and in the evening*, with tin* town illuminated with colored elect rie lights, business premises decorated, and the children happy in the possession of trumpets, throw-downs, and crackers, the scene was one of joyous animation.

During the course of tin* evening the Municipal Band played a programme of seasonable selections, which gave tin* final Christmassy touch to the festivities.

In the early part of the evening a parly of members of the County Club paid a visit to St. Hilda’s Home at Otane and Abbotsford Home, Waipawa, Mr S. B. Houghton impersonating* Father Christmas and presenting each child with n handsome gilt, whilst a large Christinas tree at each home was brilliantly illuminated with colored candles. At midnight a special service was held at the Catholic Church, iffass being celebrated in the presence of a very large congregation, and the choir rendered a number of carols.

A party of joyous revellers visited several residences in the town and sang some of the old-time carols pleasingly.

The various church services on Sunday were well attended, and at each the sermons and music were specially appropriate to the occasion. Monday and Tuesday were devoted to holidaymaking. A great number of townspeople went picnicking, others to Ihe races al Waipukurau, and not a few spent the two days on the Sports (’luh’s grounds, enjoying the beautiful weather and the glorious surroundings.
