MAKARETU SPORTS.
This popular gathering attracted a large crowd of people from all parts of the district on Wednesday, and a most enjoyable day was spent by all. Amongst the visitors were Sir George and Lady Hunter, who received the felicitations of many friends. The various sporting events created great interest, particularly the chopping and sawing. The management was excellent, and no hitch occurred to mar the pleasure of the day’s outing. Following were the results of the principal events: — ATHLETIC EVENTS. 100 Yards Handicap.—First Heat: S. Barlow, 9yds., 1; 1L Rood, Byds., 2. Second Heat: G. Wilson, Byds., 1; T. Meissner, 10yds., 2. Final: G. Wilson 1, R. Rood 2, T. Meissner 3. Won by half a yard. 220 Yards Handicap.—S. Neagle, 12yds., 1; IT. Escreet, 14yds., 2; G. Wilson, 16yds., 3. Won by a foot. 440 Yards Handicap.—L. Kyle, 21yds., 1; R. Young, 12yds., 2; L. Baker, 26vds., 3. Won by about 2 inches. Hajlf-mile Handicap.—R. Young, 15yds., 1; H. J. Phillips, 30yds., 2; H. Escreet, 10yds., 3. Won by three yards. Single Ladies’ Race. —O. Thomsen I. I. Simmonds 2. Flag Race. —H. Baker 1, C. McLean 2.
