GRAND PATRIOTIC BALL.

(Own Correspondent)

At Otane on Wednesday night' the

ball arranged by the Pilcher brothers in aid of the Soldiers’ Memorial Fund was held,in the Town Hall and proved an unqualified success. Both the hall and the annexe were arranged for dancing, and the visitors present,

istimated at over one hundred couples

comfortably filled both rooms. Excellent music was provided by Mrs Dunn’s orchestra, from Hastings. A

large marquee had been erected in the hall grounds, and an excellent sitdown supper was provided under the arrangement of Mrs Page and Mi‘s Summarsell, the decorations which were arranged for the tables by Miss Page being a very pleasing feature. The hall was beautifully decorated with bush scenery and bunting, with electric lights ail over, the installation being driven by an engine in charge of Mr Pilcher, sour., and Mr E. Sumtnarsell.

The representative for the district, Sir George Hunter, was present and was introduced by the chairman of the Otane ToWn Board, Mr A. G. Clark. Sir George congratulated the promoters on the splendid results of their effort, pointing out the worthiness of the cause for which th¥ ball was arranged, and stressing the great debt that all owed to the soldiery who had risked their lives to maintain the integrity of the Empire and to safeguard those who remained at home. There were a large number of visitors present from Hastings, Pukeliou, Waipawa and Elsthorpe, some very handsome and charming dresses being worn. The greatest credit is due to the PilcJier family, who voluntarily

arranged and who, with theft- friends, did the whole of the necessary work for the ball, which was undoubtedly one of the most successful ever held in Otane.
