SHOES FROM FISH
Your boots and shoes may soon cost you less. Experiments are being conducted on leather made from fish skin, which does not differ much from ordinary leather. It has been stated that shark skin and porpoise skin would make serviceable footwear.
The skins of fish have hitherto been a by-product of the fish oil refineries, but there is the prospect now of the launching of an industry solely for the purpose of the recovery of these skins.
Stations have been established, and there have been large catches of sharks. Experiments have shown that the stomachs of the shark and the whale can be worked into strong soft leathers resembling kid.
The hide of one shark will produce from twelve to forty square feet of leather, according to the size of the fish; the skin of a devil fish will often cover an area of fifty to a hundred square feet.
