WAIPAWA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening Present: Mr W. I. Limbriek (Mayor), and Crs. F. Witherow, W. Simpson. W. Pellow, Jas. Bibby, G. Hunt, H. Rathhone, F. Holt and M. Sebley. CORRESPONDENCE. The Post and Telegraph Department asked permission to instal a ringer to connect with the fly-wheel of the gasworks engine, with the object of improving the telephone service.—Agreed to at charge of £5 per annum, with understanding that no guarantee will be given for a continuous service in the event of the machinery breaking down. The Waihi Borough Council asked the Council’s support to a resolution, “That in view of the excessive price and scarcity of timber, the Government be asked to bring- down legislation this session prohibiting the export of timber until, the local markets are supplied.—To he supported. W. J. Pellow, secretary of the Progressive Association; advised that at a meeting of his association a resolution was carried urging those concerned to bring about as speedily as possible the adoption of Saturday for the weekly half-holiday in Waipawa, Otane, and Waipukurau.— Reply suggesting thar business people of three towns agree to change and then approach the respective local bodies.

J. 'Chambers and Son, Ltd., advised that pumping station supplies had been forwarded by rail. —Received.

E. E. Bott asked whether the Council is the controlling authority for the theatre box plan, and if so why had' it\been removed from the shop where it had been kept for many years. —The Mayor said the Council had no motive in the change and that it arose through an error of the custodian in making use of a free hand given by the “Digger” company.

The District 'Health Officer forwarded certificate that a building in High street owned by the Public Trustee is insanitary, dangerous to the public health, and should lie ordered to be pulled down.—The Council did not think it should go to such extremes, and considered the action, of the Health Department arbitrary. There were other places in the town equally as had. However, it was decided to suggest to the tenant to make necessary improvements. L. M. Watson applied for two weeks’ leave of absence.—Granted. OVERSEER’S REPORT. H. Fletcher, borough overseer, reported as under:— Fencing.—The fencing on Abbotsford road is finished and most of the scrub eut and burnt. A few rails are needed on the river side of Ruataniwha road, also the tightening of wires to keep stock from going over the bank. Metalling.—Metal patching has been done on Tamumu and Rqataniwha roads, also several loads carted for private people. Coal.—Twenty-eight tons of coal have been carted to the gasworks.

Water-tables, Bush. —Labor beinf; plentiful I am having the drains and water-tables cleaned out in the Busli roads. A few' days more will complete the work. A start has beei made in Kenilworth street to clear up all the streets in tile borough as authorised.

Culvert, Abbotsford Road.—The block in culvert at junction of Domain and Abbotsford roads has been attended to and the outlet drain deepened. Tarring.—Tbe broken places on the tarred part of Ruataniwha and High streets have been attended to. There is very little tarred shingle on band at present, and I would recommend that some be got ready for tbe coming tarrufg season. General. —Alterations and repairs to sewer connections, repairs to burst water-pipes and lowering of water main in Church street completes the work done for the month.

A Complaint.—Complaints having been made that a fire in a kerosene tin urns being used in an. open yard in the middle of the town, I inspected the place and drew the occupant’s attention to what urns being done and pointed out to him the danger, also the blackening of the adjoining building, the fire being within six feet of it. The occupant’s excuse is that the landlord will not do any improvements, and if the Council insists that the fires shall not be lit in the yard he will have to sell up and leave the vicinity. Adopted. AVAR MEMORIAL. , Cr. Hunt brought ujl the question of the war memorial. He thought the Council should take the matter up. A referendum had been taken and the result was practically unanimous in favor of a clock. The Mayor replied that as chairman of the committee* he had perused various circulars and had written to a firm at Home for prices and more particulars. PEACE CELEBRATION ACCOUNTS.

Cr. Holt thought that a stateme >f accounts should be published regards the Peace celebrations. The Mayor said that one had ready been made out for subsidy n noses.
