OTANE GUN CLUB.
OPENING SHOOT OF SEASON. The Otane Gun Club held its opening shoot of the season last week, with a 15-bird Open Handicap for trophies presented by the club. The .president, Mr Gilbert McKay, in his opening- remarks, referred to the loss which the club had sustained through the death of their late president, Mr E. B. Williams, who had succumbed to the late epidemic. Mr Williams’ death was undoubtedly hastened through his unselfish efforts in assisting others, liis own powers of resistance being thus weakened. Two other members of the club had given their lives for their country, these being Messrs G. R. Porter and D. McCleary, who were killed in France. The last season of activity for the club was in 1916, when several
“shoots” were held for patriotic purposes, resulting in nearly £6O being provided through the club’s efforts for various patriotic funds. Mr McKay then welcomed the visiting shooters, of whom a large number were present, stating that the keen interest displayed at the opening shoot would undoubtedly ensure a successful season. He then opened the match by taking the first bird and securing a clean break with the first barrel.
The splendid field of 29 shooters faced the trap, the shooting throughout being of a high order. Two competitors secured all their birds, these being' Messrs G. R. Foreman and W. E. Grant, who shot off 14yds. and 12yds. respectively. In the shoot-off Mr Grant missed his fifth bird, while Mr Foreman broke his, thus winning first prize, Mr Grant taking second. It is noteworthy that Mr Foreman broke 20 consecutive birds with his first barrel. For third prize seven competitors secured 13 birds each. These were Messrs R. J. Fleming, H. S. Ellis, B. Cargill, W. Dow, A. Watson, A. Robottom, and G. S. White. In the shoot-off 11. S. Ellis proved the winner on the ninth round.
A five-bird sweepstake was afterwards shot off, in which 21 competitors took part, eight shooters securing all their birds. At the end of the first round in the shoot-off, five were left in and T. A. Howard retired on a divide, leaving Messrs R. Hopkins, J. McCleary, H. S. Ellis and W. E. Grant to shoot on. Hopkins missed on the ninth round, while Ellis missed his 15tli but secured third money. McCleary beat Grant on the 18th round, taking first prize, W. E. | Grant getting second money. Tlie scores in the Open Handicap Shoot were as follows: OPEN HANDICAP. A.
