THE ARTILLERY DUEL. RAIDS REPULSED. Reuter Message. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received This Day, 2 p.m.) LONDON, August 15. A French communique states: An artillery duel is raging in Belgium on both banks of the Meuse. Enemy raids at different points were easily repulsed. SOMETHING DOING. HEAVY ARTILLERY AND RIFLE FIRE. PORTUGUESE ATTACK. (Received This Day, 2 p.m.) LONDON, August 15. Marshal Haig reports:— There is heavy artillery and rifle fire. We repulsed an enemy attack last night eastward of' Westhoek. We improved our positions on the right hank of the Stenbeke. The Portuguese, after sharp fighting, repulsed raiders, estimated three companies strong, east of Neuve Chapelle, despite the enemy’s aggressive tactics. Our long-distance aeroplanes reached and bombed objectives and machine gunned the infantry. ENEMY’S STORY. ALLIED ATTACKS PREPARING. ARTILLERY ACTIVITY. Admiralty Per Wireless Press. LONDON, August 15. German official: Strong Allied enemy attacks in the western theatre are preparing. We took prisoner a large number of Portuguese at Neuve Chapelle. The French twice unsuccessfully attacked southward of Nanroy. There is increased artillery activity on the Aisne front, the western Champagne, and northward of Verdun. The French have brought strong forces to Verdun, especially artillery’. We repulsed attacks at Fleury.
