PEACE.
STILL A FAINT HOPE. Australian & N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, July 29. The “Daily Chronicle’s” Zurich correspondent states that Herr von Erzeberger, who has arrived there, was interviewed by the pro-German Catholic paper, the “Nachrichten,” published at Zurich. He denied that Dr. Miehaelis was a war Chancellor, and stated that the Reichstag regarded Dr. Miehaelis’ mission ns peaceful. His appointment had strengthened the Reichstag’s peace resolution. Herr Erzeberger said every effort must he made to avoid another winter campaign. “Thank God,” he proceeded, “there is still a chance for a basis of an understanding with England, whereon a general and lasting peace must rest.” He concluded: —“If I could meet Mr Lloyd George and Mr Balfour, it is probable that in a few hours’conversation sufficient progress could be made to enable official negotiations to begin.”
