HIS REASON.
One of a company of soldiers who were keeping back the crowd watching the entraining troops was endeavouring in vain to stop the encroachments of a stout gentleman. “I tell you I can’t get back any further,” said the trespasser. “The crowd’s pushing me on.” Then an officer came along. “Won’t go back? Make him,” said he to the soldier. “Put the butt of your rifle in his chest. Don’t tell me you can’t; you are the stronger man of the two.” The soldier hesitated. ‘Yes, sir, I know I’m the stronger man, ’ he said. Then desperately he added: “But he’s my guv-nor, sir, and he’s paying me half-wages while I’m away on service.”
