THE DEATH MARCH

TO VERDUN. TRONES WOOD A VAST GRAVEYARD. AMSTERDAM, July 19. The Cologne correspondent of “De Blad” says that on all sides it is becoming apparent that not a single German aim will be achieved. The military operations on the west front are being severely criticised, particularly the death march towards Verdun. The Crown Prince is openly accused of the useless accumulation of troops impeding a victorious offensive on another front. Officers taken prisoner on the west front admit that tlie Germans above all fear an English and French offensive at fresh points on the front, for which they have insufficient reserves. They say that every man in Kitchener’s armies seems a sharpshooter and in courage is equal to the best trained soldier. Trones Wood is a vast- German graveyard. More were sacrificed there tliau at any point on the retreat.
