THE HOTELS.

EARLY CLOSING SCHEME. (Special to “Mail”), AVECLINGTON, This day. Considerable interest is taken by politicians in the question of the proposal to close hotels at 6 o’clock, or at some earlier hour than at present. So far as can be gathered, opinion is almost equally divided on the subject. The opponents of the contend that no restriction of hours granted under a license issued in terms of an Act of Parliament should be made without compensation being paid. Those in favor of early closing contend that it is a measure of national economy, necessitated by war conditions; and as to compensation they point out that no such proposition has been taken into consideration by any country that has dealt drastically with the liquor question since the war began. Probably the pressure of public opinion will compel the Government to bring in some legislation, which will perhaps take the form of a compromise—B o’clock closing. That will be seriously resisted by a section of the House.
