OTANE GUN CLUB.

There was a good attendance at tlie 1 annual meeting of the Otane Gun 1 Club, Mr R. J. Pellow presiding. The balance-sheet disclosed the fact * that the club’s financial position is most satisfactory; during the past year a convenient pavilion adequate ; to the needs of the club has been erected free of liability, and the cash balance to the credit of the club is now £33 9s 3d. Regarding the coming season, the report presented to the meeting contained the following paragraph:— “As to the season on which we are about to enter, the course to be followed will need the careful consideration of members. Owing to the protracted nature of the struggle in which our nation is engaged, and the j seriousness with whicli we must necessarily view events, it would be well j that the club should act in a manner in accordance witli the general trend of thought.” Speaking on the report, the chairman said he did not wish to be a party to any action which would tend to discourage enlistment or which might appear to the public to be unpatriotic. r There appeared to be a feeling in some quarters that sport should be r abandoned during the war, hut lie considered that so long as the Sport p of Kings was continued without » abatement and so largely patronised, it could not be urged that the clean . outdoor sport of inanimate pigeon- , shooting should be discontinued and the club allowed to pass into oblivion. Moreover, he wished the club to take a stand that could be taken as a worthy example by other clubs, and ■ which would be deserving of the support of all shooters. He moved that a special meeting be called to consider what course should be followed during j this season. As a result of the motion being car- r ried a well attended meeting decided j that the club should carry on the sport, but strictly on patriotic lines, the club to receive no benefit whatever from any shoots, the gross profits of which shall be devoted to patriotic . purposes. It is intended to commence the season early in June with a shoot for trophies, all gross profits from which are to lie handed to the Wounded Soldiers’ Fund through the Otane Patriotic League, together with a subsidy from the club’s funds.
