OTANE.

(Own Correspondent). On Monday night Sergeant R. Vaughan, who is on final leave, was tendered a complimentary farewell social by the members of the Otane Patriotic League. There were a large Bnmlier present, and a very pleasant social evening was spent, Sergeant Vaughan being the recipient of a Very useful present for active service.On Wednesday night the annual meeting of the subscribers to the public library was held, Mr W. Fletcher in the chair. The balancesheet, which showed a credit balance of £6, was adopted. The secretary reported that there were still a large nundier of subscriptions in arrear, and that when these were got in the library would be in a very sound financial position. The following otliccrs were elected:—Chairman, Mr W. Fletcher; secretary, Mr J. J. Langridgc; auditor, Mr J. N. Barrie. It was decided to procure 20 new books at once, and a further quantity after tile next committee meeting. It was decided that no member have ■ore than five books out at once, as on reference to the librarian’s book it was found that some subscribers had as many as nine books out. Last year’s committee was rc-eleetcd, and it was decided to plaee a membership roll in a prominent place in the, library. On Wednesday afternoon two boys wen* badly hurt while helping to tnnk some horses, one, Mudgwav, receiving a nasty kick, while the other, Wisbaw, had the top joint of one fing«-r nearly torn off. Miss Pauline Witherow, the eldest daughter of Mr T. Witherow, who is attending the Napier High School, was successful in winning a Junior National Scholarship, her number of marks, 602, lieing tin* second highest in the whole of the Dominion. Otane has Wen suffering from intensely hot weather, and the surrounding country has a very dried up appearance. Welcome rain commenced early on Thursday morning.
