Boxing.
Ireland Defeats Bartlett, A Fair Contest. (Wanganui Chronicle.) The Opera House was packed last, evening downstairs, while the circle was nearly full, to witness the contests conducted by the Wanganui Amateur Boxing Association. As a whole, the boxing provided a good night’s sport, but the big contest was of a not too startling nature. The arrangements were first class, and the announcing of the competitors was most successfully carried out by Mr I'' D. Gaffaney. Bartlett and Ireland, the participators in the big professional contest of fifteen rounds for a £7O purse, did not impress one very much by their boxing. Half-wßy through the fifteen rounds the exhibition was mediocre, but from then on to the end the match livened up. Mr T. O’Farrell refereed in a capable manner, and there was only one decision in which he had the audience against him. The amateur preliminary bouts were all splendid, and afforded good sport.
