The two loaders of the Japanese Antarctic txpedition are reticent. From the time they left New Zealand till they decided to return to Sydney they on countered extremely rough weath-r and a succession of gales. The abip was continually awash On arriving off Viotoria Laud they proceeded along the coast to l-titudu74 degrees South, longitude 171 East. They saw nothing but icebergs, snow, and penguins. Alter four days’ buffeting, failing to make a lauding, owing to large quantities of ioe, they de oidod to return. The officers dnolare the expedition was purely scientific. They hud no iuteution of an attempt to reach the Pole They propose to stay in Sydney for some time refuting and renewiug provisions. They will make another attempt on the Polar regions in the spring.
