A Revolting Crime.
[Per Press Association] Whanqarei, This day A revolting crime was committed in the depths of the Puhi Puhi State forest. It has been revealed that Kake, a native youth aged 18, was arrested at Kaikohe, on Tuesday, on a oh&rge of murdering John Freeman, a European gumdigger, with whom Kake resided in a whare. Suspicion fell on Kake by his prodigal speuding of money, and because Freeman bad not beeu seen for tan days Kake was brought do vn from Whakapar* (the nearest station j, to Pubi Puhi, this morning, where he was met by a police sergeant. Accuse! confessed to the sergeant that he hit Freeman over the head with a heavy wooden bludgeon. He killed him and robbed him of £4O, got by the sale of the gum. Ho dragged the corpse into a secluded place and buried it. He preferred to show the burial place to the police. With the oaptive they immediately set out for the scene of the orime and will return to Whang*rei, to night, or to-morrow, with the accused and the body of the victim.
