Convent School.
Annual Concert. The annual concert in connection with the “ breaking up ” of the Convent School took place last night, in the Oddfellows’ Hall. There was a good audience, and the programme submitted showed that considerable pains had been bestowed upon the tuition of the children. The first half of the progamme was as follows: Pianoforte trio, “ Gloria in Excelsis ” (Mozart), D. Jull, A. Moroney, M. Shanly, O. Jull, E. Limbrick and F. Carson ; song, “ The Chimes of St. Mary’s,” senior girls; “ Goodnight Drill,” infant girls ; reoitation, “What’s a Baby Good For,” N. Limbriok; song, “ Tired,” M. Lyons ; pianoforte duet, “Tancredi” (Rossini), M. Cosgrove, D. Jull, M. Jorskie and A. Downer ; action song, “ Meddlesome Mattie,” infants ; drill, dub-bells, senior girls; pianoforte solo, “ The Mill,” I. Lee ; action song, “ The Railway Guard,” junior boys; pole drill, senior girls; pianoforte duet, “ Fairy Dance,” I. Lee, M. McKenna, and G. Horton ; recitation, “ People will Talk,” F. Symons; song, “ Three Green Bonnets,” C. Moroney; “ dance, “ Higland Fling,” P. Boyle and E. Whittington ; pianoforte duet, “ Faust,” M. Corskie, C. Moroney, M. Lyons, and A. Watts ; song, “ Fairies of the Sea,” senior girls; Iris drill, senior girls; song, “ God is Love,” junior girls; pianoforte solo, “ Adeste Fidelia,” M. Cosgrove.
The second part of the programme consisted of the operetta “ Daisy Dell,” which was well staged. The scene was a pretty one and the bright and many hued dresses formed a picture of oolor pleasing to the eye. The cast of characters was as follows:—Oberon, (King of the Fairies) F. Symons ; Titania (Queen of Fairies) A. Moroney ; Mother Grumpy (a witch) C. Moroney; Tipitiwidgit (Leader of Fairies of Fun) P. Boyle; Heralds M. Lyons and M. Shanly. There were a number of fairies who gave valuable help towards the sucohss of the cantata The various performers acquitted themselves with credit and gave capable representations of their respective characters. The accompanists were Miss M. Cosgrove, W. Moroney, M. Corskie, D. Jull, and C. Moroney. The orchestra was composed of Mr M. Murray (cornet), Mr J Pellow (violin), Mr F. Shany (’cello), conductor, Mr J. Cosgrove. Florrie Symons acted as Mistress of Ceremonies.
Father Johnston made a brief speech prior to the presentation of prizes, in which he alluded to the good work done by the Bisters of St. Joseph, who were imparting sound intelleotual and moral training to the pupils under their charge, father Johnston insisted upon the need of moral training as oonduoive to the interest of the individual and of the State, and quoted St. Paul as an authority on the subjeot. He paid a warm tribute to the self-denial of the nuns, aho renounoed their homes, gave up orerything and devoted their time to latching the young. Mr Downes promoted the prizes. Standard Vll.—Dux, F.
