Napier News.

[Own Correspondent.! . Napier, Yesterday. The result of the pupil teachers’ examination will be made known shortly after the return of Mr H. Hill from Wellington, in about ten days’ time. The troopers of the Fourth and Fifth contingents, who returned home last evening, met with a damp, but nevertheless hearty reception. The weather was simply dreadful, and the committee wisely decided to abandon the programme so far as an official welcome at the Mann® Parade rotunda was concerned. On the men alighting from the train they were briefly addressed by the Dean of Waiapu and Major Chicken, who, on behalf of the citizens, extended to them a very warm welcome. The band played and the crowd cheered heartily, after which the troopers were driven to their homes. The Gisborne detachment proceeded on by the Zealandia.

The weather is still anything but pleasant, and unless a most decided change takes place during the night it is extremely unlikely that there will be any football to-morrow. This will seriously hamper the Union in getting off their season’s programme, for with the southern tour in view, they will need all the fine weather they can get to play their cup fixtures. The following business of interest to settlers in the Waipawa district was dealt with by the Land Board this morning:—The H.B. Education Board intimated that they would not comply with the Land Board’s request to keep the Wakarara school open as the residents refused to guarantee a small amount towards the teacher’s salary. No action was taken.—A petition to have a road laid off through section 5, block VII., and section 10, block VI., Mangatoro, was referred to the Survey Department. —The Surveyor-General forwarded a letter from Anders Bergensen relative to section 5, block V., Ruataniwha, and it was decided to offer the lease of the section by public auction.—Proposals from the Waipawa County Council for the expenditure of thirds and fourths amounting to £699 19s 3d were approved.—The following applications were approved : To complete purchase : James Robb, section 50, block XIV., Pohui. For transfers : Section 4, block VII., Mangatoro, from Emma Wilks to J. E. and N. Nelson; section 3, block X., Mangatoro, from L. T. B. Watt to C. and K. Pettigrew; section 13, Waikopiro, from J. Morlin to Clara A. Robertson.— The Board then proceeded to consider a large number of explanations from selectors as to their non-compliance with the residence and improvement conditions, and dealt with them according to their respective circumstances.—lt was decided that lessees in arrears with the January and March instalments of their rents should be requested to remit the amounts due before the next meeting of the Board in Napier.
