EXAMINATION BEPORT, EXAMINED ‘ august 10th, 11th, 1896. Pass Subjects —Standard Vll—Presented 3. Standard VI —Present 4, passed 3. Standard V—Present 13, passed 10. Standard Vl—Present 25, passed 20. Standard llT—Present 11, passed 9. Standard ll—Present 22, passed 19. Standard I—Present 16, passed 16. Preparatory—Present 69. Standard II is poor iij classs and additional work. The description is weak and the style of the writing, drawing and exercise book work leaves much to he desired. Standard I showed good results. The answering was intelligent and the tone of the class good. Glass Subjects. Grammar—Very fair throughout. History—lntelligently taught. Geography—To be greatly improved in methods and results. Elementary science, object lessons, &c. Fair to good. Mental arithmetic—To receive increased attention. Additional Subjects. —Repetition and recitation—Pair, but improved tone and modulation desirable. Drill and exercises, calisthenic exercises.—Very fair. Drill not taken by me. Singing—Good. Needlework—Very good to excellent. Comprehension of the language of reading lessons—To be improved in Standards 11, 111, V, VI. Instruction of X and P. —The infants including Standard I is in charge of Miss Harding. She had a difficult task to perform as I understand her predecessor left no records of work done or prepared. The mistress has already done sufficient to show her aptitude with young children and no doubt the results will be satisfactory on the new lines of instruction that have been adopted. The singing is promising well; tbe writing, reading and arithmetic have made considerable headway among the little ones and altogether the department is working well. Staff. —Mr C. J. Cooke, master ; Mies Harding, mistress ; Miss Stubbs, and Miss Huggins, pupil teachers ; Miss Joneß and Miss Stables, trainees. Eoll 165, present 162, passed 77. Remarks. —Standard VII and VI with a single exception have passed a creditable examination in all the compulsory subjects but geography. Composition, arithmetic, spelling and dictation were well done. Several of the exercise books were very good.— Standard V—The pupils on the whole have passed a fairly good examination, but Nos. 9, 19 and 20 were much below the requirements. Writing, arithmetic and geography were somewhat uneven in quality. The exercise books should be improved in this standard and more attention is necessary in the proper shaping of figures.—Standard IV—Most of the pupils have passed the examination with fair credit, but writing and geography need much more careful attention. The style of the exercise books is below fair, and some of them are badly done. Much more supervision is desirable and a higher standard should be insisted on by the teachers concerned.—Standard lll—With two exceptions have passed the requirements with very fair credit. Reading, spelling, dictation and arithmetic were well done and the geography shows considerable improvement on previous years in tbe fulness of the answering. Much improvement is desirable in the style of the exercise books, and excellence in the shaping of figures in this standard should be aimed at. My remarks on Standard I and II will be found with the summary in I’orm 22, attached hereto. On the whole the school has passed a fairly creditable examination. Tbe work is intelligently done and some of it is of a very good quality. The style of the work should be improved and the discipline should be strengthened. The way the pupils enter and leave the schoolrooms is unsatisfactory. These aspects of school work should receive careful attention during the coming year. (Signed) H. Hill, Inspector of Schools.
