Return of Mr and Mrs Purvis Russell.
Mr and Mrs Purvis Russell, who have been absent from the colony for 19 years, returned to Waipukurau by yesterday’s express. A large number of friends met them at the railway station and congratulated them on their return. After much hand-shaking a start was made for Haturnu. Triumphal arches were erected at the entrance to the estate, and Mr and Mrs Russell were received with cheers as they arrived. In tho evening about 70 of Mr Russell’s old employes accepted invitations to meet their “ boss.” Largo marquees were erected for the accommodation of the numerous guests, and the tables were laid in a tasteful and artistic manner. It is needless to say that an ample supply of creature comforts was provided and that full justice was done to them. The speeches, though brief, had the merit of sincerity. Mr Russell, in responding to the toast of his health, said it afforded him considerable pleasure to see so many old fac r s round him. He had always been woll served by his men, and their relations had always been of a most cordial nature. Mr Montgomery also alluded to the capable employes who were working for Mr Russell, and although he was only a “new chum,” he could say that a better lot of men could not be found anywhere. After Mrs Russ ill’s health had boon drunk in bumpers and tbree times three been giveD, songs and recantations were contributed by a number of those present, after which the com pany dispersed. The arrangements were splendidly conducted by Mrs Montgomery, who male an admirable hostess. The gathering was one which will bo long remembered for the meeting of so many old friends conjured up recollections of the early days and many old half forgotten experiences were exchanged with gusto.
