It is intended shortly to call for tenders for formation works on Castles-streot, Ormondville. The Education Board have appointed Miss Jones to the position of assistant mistress of the Kaikora District School.

The meeting of the Norsewood Road Board, which should have been held last Saturday, was adjourned owing to there being no quorum. A cricket club has been formed at Norsewood, subscription 5s a year, and a committee has been appointed to select a cricket ground and report next Saturday. Mr Swan will move at next meeting of the Napier Harbour Board that the question of raising another loan for the completion of the breakwater, be considered without further delay. The Army Temperance Association report shows an average membership for the year of 13,486, an increase on the last returns of 1346. At the end of May the membership was 14,318. At the adjournment of the R.M. Court this morning, Mr A. W. R. Lasoelles amused the bystanders by exhibiting a novelty, namely, a very neat detective camera, and took one or two photos of the onlookers.

The Kaikora School Committee have nominated Mr A. Dillon for ono of the vacant seats on the Education Board, and as Mr Baker, who has hitherto looked after the interests of the country districts, will not seek re-election, we hope that Mr Dillon will be elected as bis substitute.

The following will represent the seniors in their match with the juniors tomorrow : —Messrs Bibby, Cosgrove, Wiseman, R&thbone, Witherow, Godfray, Howard, Mclntyre, Bennett, Kroupa, Peene. Emergencies, Lord and Salmon. Play will commence at 2 p.m. sharp. Players are requested to be punctual. The following three gentlemen retire by effluxion of time this year from the Education Board, namely, the Hon. J. D. Ormond, M.L.C., the Hon. Captain Russell, M.H.R , and Mr Horace Baker. Mr Baker declines re-nomination. Mr C. H. Edwards, of Napier, is a candidate. The Japanese Government sent a commission to England to study the work of the Church of England with a view to making it the state church of Japan. An adverse report was made because * Christianity had not saved England from becoin ing a drunken nation.’ We understand that Mr Gilmour intends to recommend to the Waipawa County Council that a reward should be offered for the discovery of road metal at convenient situations near the Danevirke-Wainui road. This is an excellent suggestion, aud may result in a material reduction of the cost of the works.

Somebody has been tersely saying: ‘‘The devil doesn’t care two straws for your profession. All he is afraid of is your practice.” How true that is in regard to the elector and the drink traffic ! What does it matter how much temperance resolutions are “resolved,” and how much tempreance professions are made, if such men either crawl iuto holes at election times, or else go and vote the straight ticket of the political party whose policy it is to give continued legal sanction to the traffic through a license system ? The funeral of the late Mr J. Mackersey took place at Waipukurau, and was very largely attended. Nearly every house in the district furnished a representative, and a large number of the deceased’s personal friends arrived by the express train from Napier and elsewhere. The coffin was covered with floral wreaths, the gifts of friends. The Rov. A. Grant conducted the burial service, which he closed with an earnest supplication that the surviving relatives of the deceased might be granted strength to bear their trial, and that the example of a noble and useful career might inspire others to do likewise.

A case of considerable hardship has been brought under our notice, arising out of proceedings in the Waipawa R.M. Court, and we shall be happy to receive and acknowledge subscriptions in aid of the sufferer, M. A. Petrovski, who has been subjected to a loss of £4 lls by the following circumstances :—A claim was made upon him for damages for nonperformance of an alleged contract. The plaintiff consulted one of the local lawyers, whose clerk .took certain action against defendant. Afterwards the plaintiff retained the other local lawyer, and the defendant was unable to secure the services of the first lawyer, as he refused to act, on the ground that he had already acted for the plaintiff. Consequently Mr Petrovski was compelled to engage a lawyer from Napier, whose fee was £4 4s. This morning the plaintiff induced Mr Petrovski to settle the case out of Court, assuring him he would pay expenses. Mr Petrovski had engaged two witnesses, but had not subpoenaed them, and he now finds that the additional costs which he is called on to pay amount to £4 lls. We have not stated further particulars, as we prefer to leave enquirers to satisfy themselves of the merits of the case before sending contributions. We have already received £2 10s, and other contributions will be notified in next issue.
