A Deputation from the Rechabites.
Yesterday morning wc were honored by a visit from Mr Richard Phillips, a dignitary in the Rcchabitc Tent, ami the Bov. J. C. Kceles, also a member of lliat order. These gentlemen desired to point out that a slight ciror had been fallen into by us on the previous day of publication. Our readers will remember that we remarked that v/e believed Mr ltathbone would be willing to accept any fair offer for a road through his property, to he opened up instead of Wavcrley Htrcei, as lie would be sure to place value on a frontage. Wo concluded by saying that the Beeliabitcs evidently did not value a road frontage, judging by their actions in regard to the opening of Wavcrley Street. Mr Phillips sa}-s it is not correct to say that tho Beeliabitcs had obstructed the opening of Wavcrley Street, as no offers have ever been made them on the matter, lie says the Beeliabitcs expected the Town Board to consult them, and that they did not do so. Ho further states that oven if tho Town Board had consulted them on these terms, the Beeliabitcs would have wanted some compensation for the land. lie also adds that the Beeliabitcs arc to this day willing to meet the Town Board, if the latter make application to them, to come to arbitration. Mr Phillips says the Beeliabitcs would bo willing to appoint a valuer to meet a similar representative of tlie Town Board, their decision, or at most with that of a referee, U» m final.
Wc a ked Mr Phillips if we were rigli in supposing that tho Beeliabitcs do nc set any value on the road frontngo. II replied, “ w . on’t care a single straw fa
Then wo pointed out that since they d not value it, it is inconsistent of them l oppose Wavcrley Street being closed i favor of a road through Mr ltathbone’ land.
To this, Mr Phillips replied that eve Her Majesty Queen Victorian had tried t close a road near Westminister Abbe; once, but she was not permitted to do sc lie spoke as if the Bcchnbites would oppos the Waverlcy cutting being closed. II said lie did not mind if the road wer never made, so long as it was not closed.
