A fire nearly occurred in Mr H. T. Arrow’s house this morning, tho roof catching, and a high wit;d blowing at the time. Mr Cosgrove, who lives next door was much alarmed and told the' occupants of the house iu time for them to extinguish the sparks with a bucket of water. Norpian G. Hall, the’ Kumeroa school master, lias been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment. He made 30s dishonestly. Another young fellow has practically got off. Ho made about £7O most dishonestly. A fellow thief in a southern town, for the same offence received two years hard labor. And this list of incongruities might be continued almost to the length of a column. There is no particular name for the system which inflicts punishment in this unequal way. It is usually called “Law and Justice” and will be, we presume, until people arc sensible enough to invent a more suitable name. News reaches us to-day that the Ormoudville Licensing Committee has promised to grant licenses to four publicans in Juno next, provided that they erect houses in accordance with plans submitted to tho committee. Iu Danevirke, too, Mr Baddeley is receiving an extension of hours, his license being until midnight, like Mr Allard foe’s. This town has now more liberty than any other country town in llawko’s Bay.

Worboys, of Auckland, who has a brother who was for long Methodist minister at Woodville, has applied to the authorities for permission to be accepted into the Presbyterian church. Mr Worboys is a Methodist minister, and came out from London about three years ago. A little commotion took place this afternoon which enlivened tliejtownfrom its usual reverie. A number of natives were passing through from Mangatarata station, where they had been shearing, on their way home to Taradale. One of them Olivia by name, was with her husband, and the two were celebrating the termination of their labors rather heartily by indulging in the cup which soothes and also ’tosticates. After a time they begon sparring, first quarrelling over the baby, and then over a cheque of £6 which Olivia’s industry lnd gathered together, she having acted as ‘flecce-ho.’ Finally the couple came to blows, and those were exchanged at intervals during the afternoon, the wife getting the best of it at times and then the husband having a run of luck. The latter, however, was two enthusiastic and struck tho poor woman several very hard blows. She fell on the ground and for nearly half an hour she shewed no signs of consciousness. For a while it was thought tho poor woman was dead, but she sopn began to breathe. All the doctors were away from home, although Mr Bhanly kindly saw that they were sent for. Constable Tvonson looked after the woman and Mr Drummond saw she was alive, and recommended quiet in the mean while. She is now all right. Mr 11. J, Baker has takcu up his residence in VVaipawa. We arc glad to have him with us again, and are pleased to see that he ir apparently iu the best of health. Doctors Gave Him Up. —“ It is possible that Mr Godfrey is up and at work, and cured by so simple a remedy V “ I assure you it is true that he is entirely cured, and with nothing but Am. Co’s Hop Bitters, and only ten days ago his doctors gavo him up and said he must die. “ Well-a-day 1 If that is so I will go this minute and get some for my poor George. I know hops are good. Read
