HAMPDEN.

I am pleased to notice that our local Racing Club is putting forth a very edible dish to be discussed on the 28th inst. The weather being fine a goodly number of persons should put in an appearance, it being the first day of the racing carnival. Since this place was named Hampden, I am sure, such a number of accidents has not been recorded, as I have seen from time to time appear in your journal. Your own has not passed olf unscathed for he is at present suffering from a very severe cold, which I may state are very prevalent up here at present. What with fires, colds, burns and broken limbs. I can assure you that we have had very bad time of it lately. Only this evening I was informed that Mr Lambier (hawker) had liis waggonette capsized on his road to Kereru. lie tried the new road us an experiment and found to his cost that it is not fit for light waggonnette traffic. The only damage done I believe was the breaking of the covering of the van. A certain amount of dissatisfaction exists up this quarter as to the allocation of the £12,000 which is to be borrowed. It does seem a small sum (400) for this portion of the Waipawa riding considering the amount proposed to be spent on roads and bridges centring at Ongu Onga. One gentleman totted up the amount to be expended and so far as 1 can remember it totalled the respectable sum of £7OOO. Ido not exactly know what the amount of the rateable property in this part of the riding is, but I venture to state that it is considerable. Therefore on those grounds I think the ratepayers have reasons to be dissatisfied. I am not aware that they are averse to the proposed loan only to what they claim to be an unfair allocation. However the Council may see their way clear to make some modification ; and if so we shall be satisfied.—[Tlie Council will be much relieved by the expenditure of the loan money and will be able to assist districts which may appear to have been neglectdd, out of their own funds.—Ed.]
