HAMPDEN PUBLIC LIBRARY.

[from our own correspondent.} Lhk annual meeting of subscribers to the above institution took place on last Saturday evening. Very few turned up, only seven members of the old committee putting in appearance. Mr J. J. Buchanan being voted to the chair, he called on Mr McMillin, the lion, sec., to give an account of his stewardship. The accounts showed a small credit balance, which was consider *d very satisfactory, as the building had been painted during the year at a cost of £5 ; also an old debt was wiptd off which had been owing since last year on the reading room. The committee ex- ,j poet to be able to send for a number of new books in March. The secretary was instructed to intimate to each subscriber of the matter, so as to got in a list of | books most congenial to their tastes. A cordial vote of thanks was unai i- |s mously passed to the proprietors of the 1 following newspapers for their kindness in supplying the institution with a copy I of their respective journals free of $ charge : Waipawa Mail, Telegraph, m Hawkey ling Herald, Woodville Exami • I tier, Evening News, Manawatu Standard, I and The Watchman (A ickland). It was also tvsolved to subscribe to the Auckland Weekly News. The following new committee were 1 elected : —Messrs Buchanan, Hardy, Moor.’, Craven, Pemberton, Mathews, Austin! I M. Vesty, and J. McMillin. Mr Jaime Mathews was re-elected treasurer, and Mr James McMillin lion. sec. A cordial vote of thanks was accorded to the secretary for his past services, and also to the librarian, Master Arthur Park inson.

No other busiuess cropping up, a vote of thanks was accorded to the chairman, Mr Buchanan, closed a very successful meeting.
