ACCIDENT TO THE STEAMER
SOUTHERN CROSS. When tho Union Company’H steam* r Southern Cross (Captain C. Spank**) was on her way between Vavua Levu and Levuka, on April 2nd last, she was stranded on the Wakaza reef. At 4.30 a.m. the master noticed a peculiar smokiness of tho water ahead, and ordered the engines to bo reversed. Tho steamer immediately took the ground and remained fast. Her deck cargo, which comprised about 5 tons of logs was jettisoned, boats were prepared for lowering, and a kedge was laid out to keep tho vessel from getting broadside on. She was then in the Wakaza Reef, in latitude 17*38 S. longitude 1797 E. The engines were kept going astern, and as the tide rose the steumcr was floated off, after having been on the rock for about an hour. She did not sustain sufficient damage to cause any leak, and proceeded on her voyage to Levuka. The Fiji Murine Board held an investigation into tho circumstances, and decided that no special wrongful act or default was found against the master, but cautioned him to bo more careful in future.—Auckland Star.
