WOODVILLE

[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Capt. Garner, the commanding officer of the military district, paid us a visit last Thursday in order to inspect the Woodville Rill *s. The regulations say that the commanding officer.* of districts are to arrange with nfiiccis commanding corps for the most convenient time for inspection, but tho li.lbs only got two days’ notice. However, there was a capital muster, only two out of the fifty being absent, and one of them was in Xapiet. Three young fellows were falling hush about six or seven miles away, and only heard of it by the baker reaching them at live o’clock, and they were on parade by seven. When interest 1 ikthis is shewn in a corps there is every hope for its success. Capt. Garner expressed himself greatly phased with the muster, and with the progress the men w« re making in their drill, telling them also that they ought not to fail to make more as they had thoroughly capable oflieers. The gift auction for tho Methodist Church, of which I told yon, came off on Saturday night, and was a fair success as as far as it went, hut it by no means went as far an the promoters had expected, the proceeds being only about £2O, while the debt they wished to remove is £BO. The articles offered, however, in most instances fetched very fair prices. Doubtless if the weather had been more favorable there would have been a better attendai.ee of the public, and a more successful sale.

Js it telling you an old story to say that we are hard up for J.lVs here? Not that Justice's justice is always a very desirable article, but they are convenient sometimes, besides being ornamental. We have only Mr Carlile in the commission here, and ho lives about three miles out of town, and the roads to his place are “ holy terrors,” so that it is very hard to get at him. And seeing that w« only have an R.M. Court about once iu two months, if any case arises in tho meanwhile it makes it very awkward to dispose of. Mr McC-«rd!e. of Pahiatua, who has lately been appointed to the Commission of the Peace, was up here one day just after his appointment, and was pounced on to assist to adjudicate on a “drunk,” but ho not being trammelled by traditions of office, expressed a strong desire to fine the man who made the diuuk instead of the incapable one himself.

Mr Isles of the Awahurua Bridge bakery is intending to start business in the town itself, and accordingly Mr E. T. Sturdy is erecting buildings for him just beside Mr Bliss at the corner of Ross Street. Mr Beagley has just completed the oven, which is a first-cl ass piece of work. It will be heated by a furnace, and the bakehouse has been built over it. The erection of the shop in front will proceed immediately. Messrs Banner and Liddle, of Napier, are building a butchery and bakery at the corner of Vogel and Grey Streets, for Messrs Trewteek and Gower. It is a large two storied building, and completely dwarfs all the surrounding ones. Mr Riau, I believe, intends to take out an auctioneerVlieense, and build a sale-room close to the Examiner office.

Mr Murray has been very busy lately getting signatures to the petition for the proposed Maharalmra lioad District, and has succeeded in getting an overwhelming number of the purchasers in tin* Mith&rahora and of tho settlers in the lleretaunga. The proposed district will have an area of about 2(5,000 acres, and a revenue of about £IOOO or over, so that it ought to be able to do a lot for the roads within its boundaries.
