London, August 5. The Australian cricketers commenced a match to-day against 18 of the Hunslet Club, at Hunslet, near Leeds. The Home team went in first and scored 75. The Australians then went in and were all disposed of for 85, the bowling of the Huuslet men being dead on the wicket and doing great execution. The weather was showery during the day, and the ground was consequently very dead.

August 6. Sir Hercules Robinson will, it is stated, succeed Sir Bartle Frere as Governor of Cape Colony. The Right Hon. W. E. Forster, Chief Secretary for Ireland, made a speech in the House of Commons to-day, in the course of which he said he deplored the rejection of the Irish Tenants’ Compensation Bill by the House of Lords. He trusted the favorable harvest prospects would alleviate the condition of the farmers, and he appealed to members to use their influence to preserve order. In consequence of the rejection of the bill, troops have been ordered to Ireland, as disturbances are feared.

Mr Forster, Chief Secretary for Ireland, announced in the House of Commons today that disturbances were not feared in Ireland as had been stated. The troops being sent to that country would merely occupy the districts where there had been agrarian outrages in order to replace the regiments that were ordered to India. August 7. Lord Claud Hamilton has defeated Mr Samuel Plimsoll in the election which has just taken place for the vacant seat for Liverpool. Sif Arthur Gordon, Governor of New Zealand, and Major George Cuinine Straham, recently appointed Governor of Tasmania, will govern at the Cape until the arrival of Sir Hercules Robinson.

The cricket match, Australian versus eighteen of Huuslet, near Leeds, was concluded to-day. The Home team, in their second innings, were all disposed of for 83 runs. The Australians then went in, and made the required number of runs, 94, with the loss of only two wickets, and thus won the match by eight wickets. march to-morrow for Candahar, arrd r the remaining British regiments will withdraw without delay' to Gundamuk. Melbourne, August 9. The Governors of all the Australian Colonies have accepted an invitation to the opening of the Exhibition. Sir Hercules Robinson has, of course, been obliged to decline. Captain Payne, the Harbor Master has been suspended from his position for neglecting to notify the removal of a foghorn from the harbor.
