Nursing £SOO-a-Year Profession NEW BEITISH PAY INCREASES Pay increases for 100,000 m!en and women nurses announced by the Ministry iqf Health make, nursing a fSOO-a-year profession. The new rates will eventually cost more than £12,000,000, a year, and will be respective from February 1. Six grades of permanent hospital workers are affected —three for women, three for meni. The yearly increase j average about £IOO. Top grade among women is that of ■ward sister. The previous salary was £IBO-£260, plus emoluments of £l2O. The new rate is £375, rising by seven annual increases of £ls and one increase of £2O to £500.. A charge nurse, the men's highest grade used to receive £315-£3BO. Resident nurses will 'have to pay £l2O for their board, and non-resident nurses £2O a year for their mfeals and laundry service. Preceding the long-awaited awards wore years of negotiation, appeals, and recommendations by unions and individuals pressing the case for nurses.
