“How Do You Do?” says Arthur Askey-The Pocket Comedian

It is no ordinary party, but a jollification in some listener’s home. Arthur and his companions—including one celebrated visitor—are guests of the family, and BBC microphones seild the resulting gaiety to radio listeners. On this occasion the Askey gang went to Hampstead, in North-West London, ■where they were welcomed to a party given by Mr and Mrs Matthews, Pearly King and Queen of Hampstead, who are known to all their friends as Bert and Beck. In this picture Arthur is seen making

• rude remarks at the expense of Rose, ■ i the Matthews’ daughter, and her hus- ■ j band George, who also have a goodly ■ 1 share of pearl buttons on tiieir garments. It is best not to ask where Arthur managed to secure his suit of “pearlies” for, ; whatever he may be, he is by no means , a genuine coster, like the Matthews’ and ■ j their family, and it is only genuine cosh ■ i ermongers who are really entitled to em- > ’ hellish their clothes with a rash of pearl [ buttons, while the women of the family I wear hats almost top heavy with ostrich r , feathers.
