MISS SHIRLEY SUGDEN ANOTHER BRIDE-TO-BE Misses Doris Hill, Eileen Lee and Betty Boyd, entertained at a very pleasant gift evening held at Mrs C. Hill’s residence, Peake’s Road, in honour of Miss Shirley Sugden whose marriage is to take place shortly. The guest of honour looked very charming in a frock of floral silk. The lounge was bright with Iceland poppies and bowls of mixed flowers. Games, competitions and musical items preceded the opening of many useful gifts by Miss Sugden, after which a delicious supper was served. Those present were: Mesdames W, Sugden, C. Hill, T. Lee, A. W.C.T.U. THE MONTHLY MEETING. ' " , " r / The monthly meeting of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held on Thursday in the Methodist Hall and there was a .large attendance. Mrs Kemsley presided, and reports of the recent District Convention at Tauranga were presented by Mesdames Kemsley and Bettridge. The reports showed a large increase in membership for 'South Auckland and also an enlarged cradle roll. Details of the Maori Union recently formed in Te Kuiti were most interesting. Captain Kemsley (Salvation Army) was the speaker for the afternoon, and told of the work amongst Maoris on the East Coast. An interesting item contained in a newspaper report from Washington was as follows—“ The whole distillery industry of U.S.A. will close at midnight on October 25 for sixty days to conserve gi’ain for shipment to Europe. It is expected that between ten and million bushels of grain will be saved by this measure.” The meeting closed with Benediction ,and afternoon tea was served.
