The Championships ■ Well' Under Way

FIRST ROUND COMPLETED LINKS IDEAL FOR PLAY Golfing was under the most favourable conditions on Saturday when the first round of the championships was decided. The links were in excellent order, and as a result there was good 'scoring, and many close contests. _ , Credit is due to the course superintendent, Mr C. G. Vosper, and the caretaker, Mr Fred Gibbons, for the ideal playing conditions. The links should be at their best for the Labour Day Tournament later this month, The keenest match on Saturday was that between J. Billet' and I. Litchwark, a decision being reached only at the 21st hole, where Butler Won with a bogey three. Butler's card was not handed in, but a fair inch-, cation of the standard of play was the fact that Litchwark played a 76 gross. Litchwark repeated this performance on Sunday, and his handicap has been reduced from 8 to 7." Butler has also been brought down a stroke from 11 to 10. D. McCathie is now approaching his best form and had- no difficulty in elinminating the club captain, J. R. Haworthi A. H. Clayton also played well to defeat F. Entwisle comfortably. V. C. Hollis and E. A. Morrice had a keen contest, being all square at the 16th. Assisted by stymies at the last two holes, Hollis won 2 up. The improving W. Bobbette had B. Farquhar fully extended for the greater part of the game, but went under 3 and 2. \ After a bad beginning, C. E. Hargraves had no chance of making up leeway op W, Kiee, who is on his game again and the. match finished at the Elbow. G. W. Allen beat Les Haworth 2 and 1. l There is also keen interest in the" intermediate and junior championships.. P. S. Kirk is favourite for the intermediate section, and proved this' by scoring 37 points in' the stabkford on Saturday, when he had a bye. His handicap has been reduced from 15 to 13. R, Rush and I Fairbrother appear to have the the best prospects among the juniors. The former earned a two-stroke reduction in handicap on
