MAINLY FOR WOMEN

MARRIED AT GISBORNE HILL RIVERS _ St. Mary’s Church, Gisborne,, was the scene of a very pretty wedding recently, when Joan Edith, daughter of Mr and Mrs E. Rivers, Wainui Beach, Gisborne, was married to Aubrey Conway Hill, son of Mrs K. Hill, and the late Ernest Hill, of Wilson Street, Cambridge. The Reverend Father O’Sullivan performed the ceremony and Miss Pat Keane presided at the organ. Entering the church with her father, the bride wore a gown of needlethread lace over oyster satin, buttoned from neck to lcnee with tiny satin buttons, and finished at. -the waist with a plaited girdle of satin. Her cream tulle veil "was caught to the head by orange blossom, and she carried a lovely shower bouquet of freezias, ' hyacinths, cream daffodils and maidenhair fern. In attendance to the bride were the Misses Valerie Rivers, sister of the bride, and Monica Hill, sister of the bridegroom, and Sandra Nicholson as flower girl. Their gowns cf sky blue American voile were fashioned on Victorian lines with tight fitting bodices featuring an off the shoulder neckline, and four small frills forming the sleeves and yoke. The full skirts were finished with four frills around the hipline, and offset with pale pink velvet sashes. Pale pink feathered halos were worn, and they carried bouquets of stock, cyclamen and sweetpeas in pink and mauve tonings with maidenhair fern. Mr Ivan McCall, Coromandel, Avas the best man with Mr Bert Davies, of Cambridge, as groomsman. The ushers at the church were Messrs J. W. Parker and E. Birkett. The reception was held at Low’s Reception Rooms, Gladstone Road, Avhere the guests Avere received by the parents of the bride, and mother of the ’groom. Mrs Rivers Avore a smart forest green ensemble relieved Avith a shoulder spray of autumntoned flowers., Mrs Hill was in a model violet two-piece suit Avith a spray of cyclamens. During the reception Mrs H. Chrisp rendered the solo “My Prayer,” and Mr J. Parker rendered “I’ll Walk Beside You.” For travelling on her honeymoon, the bride chose a broAvn corduroy velvet suit with a spray 'of orchids, brown accessories and sage-green brown veiled hat. MISS NEW ZEALAND QUEST FIRST TWENTY ENTRANTS The first twenty entrants in the “Miss New Zealand” quest, announced i by headquarters of the quest in Wellington this week, show that the girls come from all parts of the Dominion. Wellington and Christchurch lead in the number of. entries, with Dunedin next. Auckland has only one competitor so far. The names and addresses of the entrants are:—

Christchurch—Miss Mary Wooton, Miss Gean A. Barnes, Miss Patricia McKenna, Miss Olga Purves and Miss Desiree Brown. Ashburton— Miss Gwendoline 'Stewart. 1 Dunedin —Miss Jacqueline Fraser, Miss Priscilla Black and Miss Joan Marshall. Wellington—Miss Valerie Simpson, Miss Meg Fryer, Miss Gabrielle Phillips, Miss Margaret Wright, Miss Phyllis Stewart and Miss Margot Bradley. Auckland —Miss Maile Morris. Marlborough—Miss Pauline Davey. Marton —Miss Isobel Cameron. Invercargill—Miss Elaine Robinson. Wanganui—Miss Janet Campion. There is special interest in the quest in Otago because of the provincial celebrations to be held there next year. The district winner will be known as “Miss Otago” and will

probably play a leading part in the celebrations. Entries in the quest close on October 11, with tfie headquarters in the Hotel St. George Building, Wellington, and the minimum entrance fee of £250 must also be paid in by that date. The four judges will then make their tour of the Dominion, interviewing every candidate at convenient judging points and picking the seventeen district winners, who will go to Wellington for the final choice, probably early in November.

PIPE BAND DANCE MANY VISITORS ATTEND On Saturday night the Cambridge Highland Pipe Band held another successful function at Leamington, the hall being Avell filled. Visitors from quite a distance Avere present. Mr A. Merriman Avas • M.C., the music being supplied by Mr R. Stites and Mr • Morriss. Items Avere rendered by Miss J. Osborne and Mrs Blaler, Mrs J. Christie being the accompaanist. The highlight of the evening Avas the first public appearance of the pipe band, Avhieh gave an item, and it AA’as so much appreciated that they had to give an encore. The Cambridge Fipe Band is uoav an accomplished fact. During the' evening Mr Merriman extended a warm welcome to visitors from Tauranga, Avho included Mr A. Fleming, president of the Tauranga Pipe Band, and Mrs Fleming; also Mr and Mrs Graham. Mr Fleming said he was pleased to see the show that the local band put on, and expressed the hope that the Tauranga Band Avould soon pay another visit to Cambridge. A splendid supper was provided by the ladies of the committee, Avho spared nothing in that direction.
