CAMBRIDGE DEPOT
FOR FERTILIZER DISTRIBUTION ADVOCATE IN MR HEWITT At the monthly meeting of the Waikato County Council this week, Mr H. P. Hewitt, Cambridge Riding member, made it quite plain that he was strongly in favour of the scheme for establishing fertiliser and lime depots in various parts of the Waikato. He urged that one such point be Cambridge. . •'' i
Mr Hewitt said there was a very large building at Cambridge that he thought could be used. It could store 1,000 tons or more. The building, now practically empty, had been a stove for supplies for the hydro-electric works at Karapiro.
The suggestion of Mr Hewitt arose out of a discussion on the damage done to second class roads by vehicles overloading. The opinion was expressed that road classification was being ignored by carriers engaged in distributing fertilisers from the works near Auckland to many Waikato farms. It was conceded that the farmers had to have fertilisers if they hoped to increase production, but double handling into and out of depots would be more economic, than trying to strengthen and renew roads that had been damaged by overloaded vehicles.
It was decided to apply for the use of the depot at Cambridge as a means of reducing the road damage in the Waikato County. ; :
