SENIORS BEAT MANGAKINO Cambridge Rugby Representative teams continued their winning iray'liT Memorial Park on The junior fifteen retained Cup by defeating T e Awapamu, by 25 points to nil, and tjfe/g&nior team scored comfortably over Mangakino by 21 points to 3. Despite unpleasant weather conditions there was v a fair attendance.
The Cambridge forwards paved the way for the junior team’s convincing Boyce Cup Victory. Cambi’idge ripened the scoring immediately. Plaw kicking a, penalty goal. Strong attacks by Te Awamutu backs came near to success, but Cambridge went further ahead when Cubis intercepted 10 yards from the goal line and ran almost the full length of the field to score a sensational try which Plaw converted. Minutes later Rusk scored from a forward rush and Flaw converted with a fine kick. Te Awamutu fought bravely against a wind of almost
gale force, but its efforts proved fruitless. Another grand rush by the Cambridge vanguard culminated in McGregor scoring an s unconverted try. Making full use of the conditions, Cambridge increased its lead when an attempted drop goal by Vosper went wide and Cubis flashed through to win the race for the balk The half time score was* Cambridge 19, Te Awamutu 0.
On resumption Plaw kicked a second penalty goal. Bold efforts by Te Awamutu met solid defence. The Cambridge pack gave a grand display in the second spell, its well controlled rushes often spelling danger. Later in the game the Cambridge back line handled in an excellent movement and Vosper raced across wide out. The final score was, Cambridge 25, Te Awamutu 0. Mi J E. Mangakino: Brandon; Kirigi, Binnie, Tangira; Hall; Nehancho; Fisher; Tauti, Fitzpatrick, Davies, McPadden, Smith, Mahanga, Faurinio, Mason. A smart kick and and a follow up movement by W. Kelly gave Cambridge an early lead, Faterson converted the try. Cambridge, favoured by the wind, continued to make play and after Searle had n a rrowly missed a try, a vigorous forward rush, led by R. Towgood and A. Arnold resulted in the former scoring a few minutes later. M. White stab kicked into the Mangakino 25, and W. Bartlett followed up fast to score. The halftime score was, Cambridge 11, Mangakino 0.
Cambridge increased its lead soon after the change over, M. White scoring from a good back movement, Paterson converting. Houghton scored a try soon afterwards when he ran across after a quick heel by the Cambridge pack. Paterson goaled. Mangakino’s efforts were rewarded late in the game when Paterson’s clearing kick was .charged down for Davies to fall on the ball and score. Play was scrappy and uninteresting in the closing stages, the final score being: Cambridge 21, Mangakino, 3. Mr G. Vagg was the referee. Hautapu Third’s Success
By playing a 3-all draw with Matangi, the Hautapu third grade team won tjjie special round competition for Mr W. C. Arnold’s Trophy. The only club competition to be finalised is the Wooden Cup, the final series being scheduled for next Saturaday. The senior representative team to play Te Awamutu at Te Awamutu next Saturday will be published in Wednesday’s “Independent.”
