FROM TEE TO GREEN

Favourite Wins Captain’s Trophy W. RYAN RETAINS FORM G. JOHNSTON TAKES CALDWELL CUP Although weather conditions were not favourable, there was some excellent scoring on the Cambridge Golf Links on Saturday, when important competitions were finalised. Main interest centred in the final of the Captain’s trophy event, in which W. Ryan who is playing excellent golf, defeaten C. Burgess 3 up and one to play. Burgess did well to reach the final, but on the day was no match for Ryan. In earlier rounds Ryan beat W. Smeeton, R. Ireland and E. J. F. Kennedy. In the second flight victory went to P. S. Kirk, a new member of the club, who defeated Leii Haworth, 3 and 2. C. H. White took the third flight from E. A. Morrice, 2 up, and A. Turney gained a comfortable win in the fourth flight over W. Kehely. The Caldwell Cup One of the most valuable trophies of the Cambridge Golf Club is the Caldwell Cup, presented many years ago by the late Mr D. R. Caldwell, father of Mrs Barclay Farquhar. This year’s winner turned up in G. E. Johnston, who returned two excellent cards for 136 net. In the first round he was 91-24-67, and on Saturday just two strokes more. His handicap has been reduced to 22, a mark which should not deter him from figuring prominently in future competitions. Runner-up for the cup was J. Butler, who played to # two consistent rounds of 71 and 69* net. P. S. Kirk was third with 72 and 69, his handicap being reduced from 16 to 15, as
