Suburban Buses to Recommence

COVERAGE OF THE DISTRICT SCHEME BEING PLANNED FOR NOVEMBER A definite assurance that the suburban ’bus service would be recommenced as soon as possible was given to an “Independent” representative by Mr A. A. Griffiths, manager of Buses, Limited, yesterday. Mr Griffiths intimated that it was intended to try out a passenger service throughout the whole district, when Buses Limited took over the four school ’bus conti’acts on November 1. One of the difficulties had been securing sufficient buses with licenses to carry passengers, but this problem was being overcome.

The scheme is still in the course of being worked out, added Mr Griffiths, who pointed out that the timetable would be purely local, but wherever possible ’buses would arrive at the Cambridge Depot to link up with the outward service. Leamington, Roto-o-rangi, Kairangi, Maungatautari and Fencourt would all be included as well as other areas covered by the school ’buses. To carry out the four school contracts, the firm will require three buses. These will be used throughout ■ the day on the suburban passenger runs. “We will endeavour to make timetables to suit the convenience of the district,” added Mr Griffiths. “The extent to which we go will depend, of course, largely on the public sup port for the ’buses. In the near future, Buses, Limited intend to erect a sub-terminal on a property recenly' purchased from the Cambridge Borough Council in Commerce Street. This is a fairly extensive scheme and it is hoped to have it completed by the end of this year.

The company is also moving in connection with the erection of ’bus shelters at the Church of England corner and at Hall Street. There has been some difficulty owing to one shelter being';in the brick area, and the standards required because of this. This shelter is likely to be an expensive item. f
