Danger of Cycling Several Abreast

WARNING BY INSPECTOR

BOROUGH COUNCIL IN ACCORD

“I am very glad the inspector has pointed out the danger of cyclists<■ riding three or four abreast,” said Cr. W. R. Garrard at last week’s meeting of the Cambridge Borough Council when Inspector C. I. Fletcher, of the Transport Department presented his monthly report. After a short discussion, Cr. A. N, de L. Willis agreed,'* to bring the matter before the next meeting of the school committee. The inspector stated that the road behaviour of many cyclists had been causing some concern, especially by those cyclists who persisted in riding three or more abreast.

“This manner is a great danger to themselves apart from the added responsibility placed on motorists,” said the “Cyclists will do well to heed the many warnings given for this type of offence, and play their part on our highways.”

The inspector added that 41 hours were spent on borough control during the past month, and several cases of dangerous driving had been reported to the Commissioner of Transport. , Twenty-two applicants were tested for licenses during month and out of that number 15 passed the required test. The remainder failed to qualify for various reasons but mainly the lack of rjoad rules Icnowledge caused their failure. The organisation required in connection with the recent fleeting visit of Lord Montgomery was found to be well worthwhile as the whole event passed off- without a mishap. The inspector congratulated the children, big and small 'on their excellent behaviour. “This points to sound control at the schools as well as in the homes,” he added.

During the forthcoming appeals being held in connection with the O. and G. Appeal the many proposed functions will no doubt, weather permitting/be held in Victoria Street, and it is anticipated that a great crowd will be present in the town area on to take part in'the fun and games, added Inspector Fletcher. He asked parents in charge of young children, to take special care of their charges, and by doing this, help to control traffic and avoid any accident.
