Last Saturday's Two Meetings
GUIDE TO CAMBRIDGE FORM
JUMPERS AT AUCKLAND A number of the horses which raced prominently at Ellerslie and Tauranga last Saturday are engaged at the Cambridge meeting on Monday. In'the main event at Ellerslie, in which the placings were Cowper, Young Trent and Gold Dash, the starters included Valley Boy, .Conspiracy, Sublime Fox and Flying Jim which have accepted for Cambridge. Of these, Flying Jim gave the mo.st encouraging performance, finishing fast into fourth place, while Conspiracy was fifth, with a number of good ones, including Balgowan behind him.
As a result of running a good second to Town Survey in the Manakau Hurdles, Vindicator is likely to come into favour for the Hunters' Hurdles on Monday. He is a well-bred gelding and a fast jumper, and although topweight it is only with 9.10, and the class is poor. The Dozer, topweight with 12.0 in the Waikato Hunt Cup, ran third at ' Ellerslie with 12.2. He was tired at the finish, but should be difficult to head off on the fiat Cambridge course. However, strong opposition will come from Master Francis who was 12 lengths ahead of The Dozer in second place. The winner Dualin, is not entered for Cambridge. The Liverpool Handicap at Ellerslie compares very similarly with The Bollard Memorial Handicap at Cambridge. Saffron Walden and Regal Praise, who dead-heated for . first with White Blaze right up third on Saturday are not engaged at Cambridge, but Horonui and Tavernside who finished right behind them are handily placed. Other winners at Ellerslie on Saturday were Duke Royal, Royal Scot, Nilcoh and Frontier Mac. At Tauranga. The first and second horses in the Opotiki Handicap of one and a-quarter miles at Tauranga on Saturday were Sylis and Bedivere, and they will meet again in the Members' Memorial on Labour Day. Mr L. R. Haworth's Bedivere was considered to be unlucky at Tauranga, where he was standing up the leaders 15 lengths at one stage, and then went under only by a head, and will have a good chance to make amends on his home course. Although Modern View was outclassed in the Otara Hurdles by Peria Prince, he beat the remainder of the field just as easily, and on that form must be given a great show in which ever race he is started at Cambridge. He is an acceptor for both the Farmers' Steeplechase and the Hurdles. Pomade was a poor fourth. Mabel Knight and Nancy Hanks who finished first and second in the. first division of the Novice Stakes are not engaged at Cambridge, but the third horse, Foxfable, has an improver's show. In the second division. Brown Duke, trained by W. Townsen-J at Cambridge, gained a narrow victory over Bronze Pay and Noble Knight. He is a smart galloper who should win again soon.
Hunting Park beat Te Wepu by a neck in the Stewards' Handicap with three lengths to Bine Vixen. The latter was second to Trustful later in the day and on that form must have a chance in the maiden class at Cambridge. Beryl Fox was a very close third to Lord Dink and General Mentieth in the open sprint, and if the going is heavy, as it is likely to be. she will have more than an outside show on Monday.
Trustful was not re-handicapped severely for her win in the hack mile, ?nd with 9.0 in the Bruntwood Hack Handicap, will be one of the hardest to beat.
