BAKERY FIRE

ON THURSDAY NIGHT COLLINS' TOP BAKERY On Thursday night about 11 o'clock fire broke out in Mr W. R. Colilns' top bakery in Victoria Street, but with the prompt arrival of the brigade and the fact that it was discovered in the comparative incipient stage, prevented a more serious outbreak and the possible complete destruction of the bakery. Messrs E. and A. Brown, of the Cambridge Service Station, who were working in their -garage were alarmed by the smell of smoke and they made investigations to discover that the source was the bakery. One of the brothers ran to the alarm switch outside the library, but there was no response from the'siren, and so the exchange was notified and !) o brigade were promptly at the scene. The firemen succeeded in confining the fire to the roof of the main portion of the bakery that houses the ovens. Obviously the fire was centred round the ovens. A lead of water was brought to bear ami the outbreak was soon extinguished. Apart from the ceiling not a great amount of damage was done, the firemen taking the precaution to protect the dough with sa'vage sheets. On Friday morning Mr Collin**' staff were able to continue the naking, but the operations were restricted to the baking of bread. Mr Collins greatly appreciated the resistance of everybody who belped, especially the Brown Bros., the Fire Brigade, and Mr E. Bradbum, night fauitman of the Power Beard. Siren Out of Order. The reason for the siren at the town hall not sounding was due to it being put out of order by the recent storm. A short blast of the siren on Friday afternoon announced that it was in order again.
