Purchase of Herd Sires

Now that the bull-buying season is in full swing, dairy farmers would be well advised to remember that the real test of a bull’s value lies in his capacity to leave high-producing daughters (states an article by Massey Agricultural College). The most reliable basis for judgment has been proved to be the production of his daughters rather than the bull’s own pedigree, which, while being important, can lead to disappointing results. It is becoming more and more recognised that a. good sir e will produce good daughters, no matter in what herd he may be used; and that it is unwise to discard good bulls because of their age, provided they are still reasonably fertile. Many progressive farmers have been assisted in their choice by the register published recently by the New Zealand Dairy Board,' which® has indicated, in the list of nearly 2000 bulls already surveyed, those which are considered to be specially good breeding animals. Included in the register are the productions of cows with good life-time records and those of younger highproducing females,'
