WASTE CAMPAIGN
CAMBRIDGE DISTRICT EFFORTS TO BE RESUMED 9 At a meeting held in the Council Chambers on Monday evening it was unanimously decided to resume Cambridge’s waste salvage campaign and the first drive will be held in the last week of April. The Mayor (Mr Edgar James) explained, as previously published, th£ appeal of the chairman of the National Council of Reclamation that Cambridge should resume its efforts to collect waste paper andTubber especially. Mr James said he did appreciate the good work that had previously been done, especially by Mr Hampshire. A considerable sum of money had been received from the sale of the waste and it had been placed to the credit of Cambridge’s patriotic fund. In the past, however, paper and waste materials had been brought into the depot at all times and it had become almost a full-time job for a man. No man could be expected to give so much time, even to a patriotic effort. He was of the opinion that future efforts should be ,in the form of periodical drives. At present a very succesful drive was.being made 'in Hamilton and the same could be done in Cambridge. Transport Coy’s. Offer. Mr J. Jeans said he had been in conversation with representatives of the Cambridge Transport Company and Ihey were prepared to provide the trucks if arrangements could be made with the drivers to pick up waste from the district factories. Mr J. Dwyer said he was present to represent Mr T. Kane, headmaster of the Cambridge Schools. He could assure the meeting of the cooperation of the school children. There was a general discussion and it was the consensus of opinion that periodical drives be held. It was’ decided on the motion of Messrs W. Maberly and A. Looker that drives be held every three months in the district and monthly in the business area. Mr M. Well§ was appointed organiser and Mr F. T. Ray secretary. The meeting also decided that those present be a committee and that representatives be obtained in the various parts of the district. First Drive. The first drive will be held in the district in the last week in April and in the borough and Leamington on Saturday, April 29. Save The Waste. The people of Cambridge and district are now urged to save their waste paper and rubber in anticipation of the coming drive.
