BY-ELECTIONS
NATIONAL PARTY'S SUCCESS HAURAKI AND TEMUKA SEATS The by-election for the Hauraki seat in the House of Representatives was held on Saturday and resulted in the return of the National Party's candidate. Mr. A. S. Sutherland, of Ngaruawahia, by a large majority over his only opponent, Mr H. T. Head, of Parnell, an Independent returned soldiers' candidate. There was only a fairly small poll. The preliminary count showed 3,639 for Mr Sutherland and 1,043 for Mr Head, a majority for the former of 2,596. The Hauraki by-election was caused through the death in action of Lieutenant-Colonel J. M. Allen, who won the seat at the 1938 general election from Mr R. Coulter, then the sitting Labour member. Mr Sutherland is deputy chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board, member of the South Auckland Land Board, member of the Raglan Licensing Committee, and executive member of the Ngaruawahia Returned Services' Association. THE TEMUKA SEAT In a much smaller poll than in 1938, the National Party's candidate, Mr J. Acland, was returned to Parliament at Saturday's by-election for the Temuka seat by a majority of 2,026 votes.
