CLOSED PROFESSION

ARCHITECTS’ NEW STATUS POSITION IN ENGLAND Architecture has been added to the number of “closed” professions in England. August 1 was the closing date for applications for admission to the Statutory Register of Architects unless the applicant has passed one of the professional examinations recognised by the Architects’ Registration Council. Hitherto there has been no legal obstacle to anyone, however destitute of qualifications, describing

himself as an architect. The deplorable consequences are manifest in l many building estates on which the houses are advertised by the promoters as having been designed by an architect, though actually thrown together according to a unskilled notions. Henceforward those who have not secured admission to the Register will not be allowed to call themselves architects, though some months must elapse before this prohibition can be made fully effective.
