SCHOOL FACILITIES

CHILDREN AT KARAPIRO VISIT OF BOARD SECRETARY The question of arranging educational facilities for the children of workers on the Karapiro hydroelectric scheme, was given further consideration on Wednesday, when vis it was paid to the district by Mr D. \V. Dunlop, the secretary of the Auckland Education Board. He w ; as accompanied by Mr A. N. Macky, of Cambridge, the ward member of the- board. Mr Dunlop met the Karapiro School Committee, who requested that the school there should be enlarged and brought up-to-date. It was stated that the accommodation was not sufficient for the present pupils, and the hall some distance away was being used. A scheme to include the children from the works was suggested. A visit was paid to the works, where it was ascertained that 150 married quarters were being erected. It was estimated that when all the families were. in occupation, there would be about 200 children of school age. Mr Dunlop took details of how long the children were likely to be at Karapiro, it being estimated that the project would not be completed in less than three years from now. On returning to Cambridge, Mr Dunlop met members of the school committee and discussed the suggestion of bringing the Karapiro children in to Cambridge each day. The difficulties of transport were mentioned, it being stated that four buses would be required to travel at least 20 miles a day each. The Cambridge committee favours a start being made ; with the inter- 1 mediate school by erecting class- i rooms on the present agricultural ground adjoining, ;■ the high < sclypol for Standards 5 and 6. VVith the higher classes removed .from the primary school, more room would be available there for the Karapiro; children. . ..• .. ~ ,

Mr Dunlop intimated that he would prepare a report qf the position to place before the board at its 1 , next meeting.
