Air -Raid Fund.—Several ladies from Hamilton, who visited Cambridge on Monday, received a ready response to their efforts to sell art union tickets for the Air Raid Fund. The art union was organised by the Hamilton Golf Club. High Lambing Percentage.— Lambing in the Waikato has been recognised as particularly good this season, but the returns of the flock at St. Peter's School must be very much above the average. With lambing practically completed the average is 141.2 per cent. Scra-p Metal Collection.—lron and steel are not included in the salvage scrap metal being collected throughout the Dominion at the present time, but the materials most required are copper, copper wire, brass, bronze, aluminium, gun-metal, lead foil, tubes, and zinc. It is anticipated that iron and steel may later be collected. Taxation on Air Force. Members. Mr Hamilton has pressed upon three occasions in the House, for review of the situation whereby airmen are obliged to pay the social security and national security tax, while soldiers and naval men are exempt. On each occasion Mr Nash has replied that the question would require legislation. That legislation is still not introduced. Mr Hamilton has renewel his appeal, and definite reply is awaited. . Per Acre Cost of Clearing Land. —The cost of clearing land per acre has always been the subject of arguments in districts all over New Zealand. Mr Seraple recency stated in' ItlJeU|ou#e Yhat land iri\}Southjand was being cleared for £2 lonian acre, Ohakune land was averaging about £5 an acre. He added that In -his opinion, land in the old-' fashioned way could not be cleared under, acrje; "I Call it Robbery ."—"Call it another name if you like," said a straight-speaking member of Te Awamutu • Farmers' Union, at a meeting when referring to the new valuation placed oh live stock for income tax purposes, "but I call it robbery." He went on to argue that the Government created a paper value and then converted it into money by the levy of taxation at the expense of the farming community. "Arid then," he added, "we shall be told about increased production as indicated by the amount of taxation paid by farmers."
