CULL COWS
INSURANCE FOR FARMERS SCHEME AT TE AROHA An insurance scheme proposed by the Springdale-Elstow Cull Cow Committee, and adopted by the Te Aroha-Waihou branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, will be of interest to Cambridge farmers. The insurance scheme proposed would cost the farmer as follows: On road losses and no compensation cases it would take a levy of about 1/9 per head on all cattle handled. The cost to cover further compensation on compensated cases would be 1/-. Therefore the total necessary to pay 75 per cent of the boner value would amount to 2/9 per head. However, it was proposed to take 9d off the present commission of 1/6 which is received from the works, and thus reduce the levy to 2/-. This would allow of an apparent payment on a 4001 b beast in compensation cases of £3 18/- and £3 7/- on losses, plus skins when the cattle reach the works. If the 75 per cent value were paid it would be about £3 less insurance levy and droving, thus leaving an apparent profit to the scheme of 18/- a head in the one case and 7/- plus skin in the other. It would be pointed out, however, that in the first drive only one beast out of those condemned was under 4001 b, and it was quite possible that an average well over 400 3b would be the case in another season. If this were the case, it could be readily seen that the need of 18/- per head in hand is essential.
